Veteran Congress leader Digvijaya Singh finished his second consecutive term in the Rajya Sabha on June 21. During his 12-year tenure, Singh actively addressed issues like national security, education, farmers’ concerns, and social welfare. His Personal Secretary, OP Sharma, noted that Singh raised 1,010 questions in Parliament on various topics such as governance, public welfare, agriculture, education, internal security, and Constitutional matters.
Singh, a Congress politician since 1977, has held significant positions in his political career. He has been a five-time MLA, held key portfolios in the Madhya Pradesh government, represented the state in the Lok Sabha, and served as Chief Minister from 1993 to 2003 before joining the Rajya Sabha in 2014. Apart from his participation in debates, Singh was actively involved in various Parliamentary committees, including those related to Home Affairs, Finance, Corporate Affairs, and Urban Development.
During his tenure, Singh made notable interventions through Parliamentary committees. For instance, he pushed for discussions in the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs following comments by the former Jammu and Kashmir Governor on the Pulwama terror attack. Additionally, Singh advocated for discussions on the ethnic violence in Manipur in 2023, emphasizing the need for Parliamentary committees to address the crisis and its humanitarian impact.
Sharma also highlighted Singh’s role as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth, and Sports. During this period, the committee examined issues such as examination irregularities and paper leaks that had raised concerns among students nationwide.
