DMK president M.K. Stalin led a significant meeting with the party’s newly elected MLAs at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai. The focus was on the party’s role as the Opposition in Tamil Nadu amidst uncertainties over government formation. The meeting discussed the evolving political landscape, legislative strategies, and future actions post the Assembly election results.
The DMK-led alliance secured 73 seats in the recent Assembly elections, with the Congress initially part of the alliance winning five seats. However, the Congress later shifted its support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay, making TVK the largest formation with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly.
Amidst the changing political scenario, the TVK is engaging with smaller parties like the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), each having four MLAs. The DMK alliance, now with the support of 68 MLAs after the Congress exit, is likely to be in the Opposition.
The election results saw a setback for Stalin as he lost in the Kolathur Assembly constituency to a TVK candidate. However, Udhayanidhi Stalin retained his seat, possibly positioning himself as the Leader of the Opposition. M.K. Stalin assured party legislators that the DMK would not interfere in TVK’s efforts to gather the required support to form the government in Tamil Nadu.
