In response to the DMK’s recent defeat in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, party General Secretary Duraimurugan announced a significant meeting of District Secretaries scheduled for May 14 at the party headquarters in Chennai. The meeting, to be chaired by DMK President M.K. Stalin, aims to address the party’s electoral loss, organizational issues, and future political strategies.
All District Secretaries have been instructed to attend the meeting without fail. This development comes amidst a notable political shift in Tamil Nadu, where actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s party secured victory, ending the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. Vijay’s party clinched 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly and subsequently formed the government with coalition support, with Vijay sworn in as Chief Minister.
Despite seeking a consecutive term in office, the DMK managed to secure only 60 seats, positioning itself as the primary Opposition party in the Assembly. Notably, Chief Minister and DMK President Stalin faced defeat in his own constituency. While several senior ministers from the previous DMK government retained their seats, a number of prominent leaders, including Duraimurugan and Health Minister M. Subramanian, suffered electoral losses.
Following the election outcome, the DMK Legislature Party elected Udhayanidhi Stalin as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, marking a generational leadership transition within the party.
