The Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Indore Zonal Office, carried out extensive search operations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, at various locations in Indore and Mumbai. The raids on December 23 were aimed at properties associated with the Ruchi Group as part of investigations into alleged bank fraud cases.
The probe is linked to multiple FIRs filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Bhopal, against various Ruchi Group entities, including M/s Ruchi Global Ltd. (now M/s Agrotrade Enterprises Ltd.), M/s Ruchi Acroni Industries Ltd. (now M/s Steeltech Resources Ltd.), and M/s RSAL Steel Pvt. Ltd. (now M/s LGB Steel Pvt. Ltd.).
Companies founded by Kailash Chandra Shahra and Umesh Shahra are accused of orchestrating significant bank frauds through fund diversion, siphoning, and accounting manipulations, leading to substantial losses for public sector banks. The investigation uncovered a complex scheme involving the establishment of multiple shell entities for round-tripping transactions, diverting funds through fraudulent Letters of Credit and Cash Credit facilities.
Authorities froze bank balances exceeding Rs 20 lakh belonging to the accused individuals and their family members during the searches. Additionally, cash amounting to over Rs 23 lakh was seized, along with crucial incriminating documents and digital devices that implicate the accused in the fraud. This development renews focus on the Ruchi Group’s history of financial irregularities, including previous CBI investigations highlighting similar issues and a Rs 188 crore fraud case involving a bank consortium in 2021.
The current operation by the ED signifies heightened efforts to track and recover laundered assets. Further inquiries are underway, with indications pointing towards potential property attachments and deeper investigations into the beneficiaries of the diverted funds.
