As the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections draw near, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has heightened efforts to ensure transparency and adherence to election regulations in the state. A significant deployment of Central Observers has been put in place to supervise the electoral process and address complaints from the public, political parties, and candidates. Across all 234 Assembly constituencies, a total of 136 General Observers, 40 Police Observers, and 151 Expenditure Observers have been designated by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Tamil Nadu.
To enhance scrutiny and control over election expenses, enforcement agencies have increased surveillance activities statewide to prevent illicit practices like cash distribution, alcohol distribution, drug trafficking, and distribution of freebies. These intensified actions have led to seizures amounting to Rs 75.03 crore as of March 21, 2026, including cash, liquor, drugs, precious metals, and other items.
The ECI’s SUVIDHA portal remains pivotal in streamlining election-related processes by facilitating online nomination filing, scheduling submission time slots, and managing permissions for campaign activities. The platform has received 2,443 applications, with 737 processed within deadlines and the rest under review. Candidates are required to complete the online procedures and submit hard copies with necessary documents to the Returning Officer.
Authorities are urging eligible voters to verify their details in the electoral roll to ensure their participation in the democratic process. Citizens can check their status online or apply for inclusion through Form-6 before the enrollment deadline on March 26, 2026. Support services like the “Book a Call with BLO” feature and mobile apps are available to assist voters, emphasizing the importance of timely verification for a smooth electoral process in Tamil Nadu.
