With the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is preparing to implement a more sophisticated web surveillance system in polling booths across the state. Cameras inside the booths will offer a 360-degree view to officials in control rooms, while high-resolution cameras outside will monitor the surrounding areas for any unauthorized activities. Technical teams will ensure the proper functioning of all cameras before and during the polling process.
The Election Commission is considering reducing the number of phases for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections based on a proposal from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office. A decision on this matter is expected at a crucial meeting on January 5, attended by key officials. The proposal aims to conduct the elections in either a single phase or a maximum of two phases, a departure from the multiple-phase elections held in 2016 and 2021.
In the previous West Bengal Assembly elections, polling was conducted in multiple phases, spanning several days. The current proposal seeks to streamline the process to ensure efficient and effective polling. The Election Commission’s focus on enhancing surveillance and optimizing the election schedule underscores the importance of a smooth and secure electoral process for the state.
