Singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding has shared her surprise at releasing a “divorce album.” The 39-year-old artist’s upcoming record delves into her split from ex-husband Caspar Jopling. Goulding expressed how her personal life changes influenced the album’s creative direction.
In an interview with Nylon magazine, Goulding revealed that while she didn’t plan for a divorce-themed album, it naturally evolved that way. She emphasized the significance of acknowledging her past and respecting that period of her life through certain songs. The singer described the album as a reflection of her evolving emotions, particularly with the anticipation of a baby with her new partner.
Goulding mentioned her new album’s shift in tone, from dark and somber to hopeful and light-hearted. She highlighted her return to a more traditional music-making process, focusing on instruments like the guitar. The artist found inspiration in revisiting her musical roots, evoking a sense of innocence and purity from her early songwriting days.
The singer’s openness about her mental health challenges was underscored by her support for Lola Young’s decision to take a break from performing. Goulding empathized with Young’s experience after the latter collapsed on stage during a music festival in New York City last September.
