More than 26 tonnes of fennel seeds suspected of being adulterated with non-edible chemical coloring have been confiscated near Unjha in Mehsana district, Gujarat. The seizure, valued at around Rs 19.6 lakh, was conducted by the Flying Squad of the Food and Drugs Control Administration during surprise checks at Unava village, a key fennel trading center in the state.
Authorities raided two locations, including the warehouse of M/s Bhargavkumar Pravinbhai Patel and the premises of M/s Patel Rakeshkumar Talsibhai. Initial investigations revealed that the fennel seeds were allegedly treated with chemical-based non-edible coloring to enhance their appearance by making them look greener.
State Health Minister Praful Pansheriya emphasized the government’s “zero tolerance” policy towards food adulteration, led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. The Food and Drugs Control Administration seized over 26 tonnes of fennel seeds worth Rs 19.6 lakh suspected of adulteration with chemical coloring. Legal actions have been initiated against the perpetrators.
The operators at both locations were found to lack the mandatory Food Safety License necessary for food product manufacturing or processing. Three statutory samples of the fennel seeds were collected during the operation for laboratory analysis due to strong suspicions of non-edible coloring agents being used. Further actions will be based on the laboratory results.
State officials reiterated their commitment to protecting public health and warned of continued enforcement measures against illegal operators and food adulterators. The crackdown on food adulteration is part of a broader state-wide campaign by the Food and Drugs Control Administration in Gujarat, targeting unsafe food products and adulteration practices.
