An FIR was lodged against Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, in Kolkata. The complaint alleged that Adhikari made communally sensitive remarks during the Dol Yatra festival celebrations. Adhikari, while interacting with voters, emphasized the need for “larger Hindu unity” and cautioned against “pseudo-secularism” and “atheism” in the upcoming Assembly polls.
Youth CPI-M leader Sainik Sur filed the formal complaint at Ballygunge Police Station, accusing Adhikari of inciting communal discord. Sur expressed concerns that Adhikari’s statements could fuel communal discrimination and unrest among the public. He urged the police to take appropriate action to uphold constitutional values and maintain communal harmony.
Sur criticized the media for amplifying Adhikari’s remarks, which he deemed “communally sensitive.” He called for disciplinary measures against Adhikari and stated that similar complaints would be filed in other police stations across the state.
