The inaugural BJP-led government in West Bengal, under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, will commence its tenure post the oath-taking ceremony with a significant boost. The Union Jal Shakti ministry has sanctioned Rs 2,700 crore for the central ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ project. This funding, long overdue due to the previous government’s hesitance, will be transferred to the state exchequer upon the signing of a memorandum of understanding.
A recent meeting between the Union Jal Shakti ministry and the state public health engineering department resolved the pending issues, paving the way for the fund disbursement. The state government has assured its commitment to fulfilling the terms and conditions of the MoU, signaling a positive start for the new administration. The ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ initiative, initiated in 2019 to provide piped drinking water to rural households, has been extended till 2028, with significant progress already made in enhancing water access across the country.
Moreover, discussions have commenced between the Union Health Ministry and the West Bengal Health Department regarding the implementation of Ayushman Bharat, a centrally-sponsored health insurance scheme. The scheme, previously stalled in the state, is now being reconsidered for implementation following dialogues between the concerned authorities. The state’s decision to embrace Ayushman Bharat marks a shift from its earlier stance, where it favored its own health insurance scheme, Swastha Sathi, over the central initiative.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had criticized the previous government’s reluctance to adopt various central welfare schemes, including Ayushman Bharat, during his election campaigns in West Bengal. The new BJP-led administration’s willingness to engage with these programs signifies a potential shift in the state’s approach towards central initiatives, aiming to enhance public welfare through collaborative efforts.
