Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has raised concerns about the Ashes selection choices, particularly questioning the decision to pick Josh Inglis over Beau Webster. Despite Webster’s strong performance in his Test debut during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last year, he was excluded from Australia’s starting lineup for the Ashes opener in Perth, with Cameron Green taking his place at No. 6.
Webster, who was left out for the first three Ashes Tests, saw Inglis being chosen instead, despite Inglis posting modest scores while batting at No. 7. Webster eventually had an opportunity to play during the New Year’s Ashes Test at the SCG, where he showcased his skills by scoring an unbeaten 71 and taking three wickets with his part-time off-spin.
Ponting expressed surprise at the selectors’ decision, emphasizing Webster’s form and his potential to provide better balance to the team. He believed that the selectors missed a chance by not including Webster in the Ashes matches, especially with an opening at No. 5 due to Usman Khawaja’s absence.
Ponting further highlighted Webster’s consistent performance and described him as a reliable player who understands the game well. Despite not being flashy, Ponting suggested that Webster’s understanding of game situations makes him a valuable asset to the team, indicating that he should be considered for future selections.
