Former Minister and senior BJP legislator Ram Pada Jamatia has been elected unopposed as the Speaker of the Tripura Assembly. Following the proposal of his name by the ruling BJP and its allies on March 12, Jamatia filed his nomination for the Speaker’s post. The election was necessitated by the passing of the previous Speaker, Biswa Bandhu Sen, on December 26 last year.
Acting Speaker Ram Prasad Paul declared Jamatia as the sole candidate for the position after no other contenders emerged. Consequently, Jamatia was elected unopposed. Chief Minister Manik Saha, Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, and other leaders escorted Jamatia to the Speaker’s chair.
Jamatia, a former Minister of Tribal Welfare and Industry and Commerce, is the second tribal leader to hold the Speaker position in Tripura since the state’s full statehood in 1972. He previously served as a two-time MLA from the Bagma Assembly constituency. The Budget session of the Tripura Assembly began on March 13 with the Governor delivering the customary address.
Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy presented a tax-free deficit budget of Rs 34,212.31 crore for the financial year 2026-27 on March 16. The budget focuses on allocating higher funds to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. The ongoing Budget session will introduce bills to establish new institutions in the state.
