Former JNU Students’ Union president and Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar surrendered before a local court in Begusarai regarding an alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Kumar, who contested the Begusarai parliamentary constituency as a CPI candidate, appeared before the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (First) Vivek Chandra Verma and filed a bail application through his counsel.
After arguments from both sides and completing necessary legal formalities, the court granted Kumar bail on a personal bond of Rs 10,000. The case stems from campaign material with Kumar’s name and photo being found on a wall near Karpoori Sthan in Rudauli village without prior permission, as alleged by the prosecution. The complaint was filed by Kamlesh Rai, leading to legal proceedings under Bachhwara Police Station Case No. 73/2019.
Given the case’s significance, security was increased around the court premises during Kumar’s appearance, with supporters and residents gathering at the complex. With bail granted, the legal process will proceed as usual, with further hearings scheduled. Following the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Kumar joined the Congress party.
