An earlier court order granting former West Bengal Minister Aroop Biswas protection from police action until August 17 has been contested in the Calcutta High Court. The case pertains to alleged irregularities during Lionel Messi’s ‘GOAT India Tour’ event in Salt Lake last December, leading to chaos and the footballer’s early exit. Biswas, accused of mismanagement, sought protection from arrest, which was granted until August 17 with the condition of cooperating with the investigation.
The state government initiated a probe into the event as Biswas, a former sports and power minister, was implicated in the mismanagement. The organizer of the Messi event, Satadru Dutta, has challenged the court’s order granting Biswas protection. Dutta’s petition has been accepted, and the matter will be heard this week by the division bench of the Calcutta High Court.
During a previous hearing, Dutta’s counsel alleged that Biswas acquired a large number of event tickets and sold them at inflated prices. The police have initiated an investigation based on Dutta’s complaint and filed an FIR against Biswas. Recently, Biswas’s brother was arrested on charges of corruption, extortion, and inappropriate behavior towards women in the film industry.
