The police have apprehended four individuals, one of whom is a Trinamool Congress leader, in relation to the killing of a BJP worker during post-election violence in Kolkata’s New Town area. The arrests took place near the India-Bangladesh border in Bangaon and Gopalnagar, North 24 Parganas district. Initial findings indicate that the suspects were trying to escape to Bangladesh after the crime.
The victim, Madhu Mondal, a BJP worker, was reportedly slain amidst post-poll clashes in the region. Allegedly, he had a longstanding land dispute with the accused Trinamool Congress leader, Kamal Mondal, which may have fueled the fatal confrontation. The situation escalated following the BJP’s significant victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year reign.
According to reports, Kamal Mondal and his accomplices assaulted Madhu Mondal on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in severe injuries that led to his demise. The incident sparked unrest in the area, prompting swift police action. After conducting raids based on intelligence inputs, law enforcement officers arrested Kamal Mondal and three others in Bangaon.
It has been revealed that Kamal Mondal, a former member of the Rajarhat Patharghata Gram Panchayat, and his wife, Chameli Mondal, currently hold positions in the local governance body. The murder has stirred tension in the community, with locals expressing outrage and causing damage to Kamal Mondal’s residence. The newly elected BJP MLA from the area has called for stringent punishment for the perpetrators.
