The German Embassy in New Delhi revealed that Indian travelers no longer need a transit visa for layovers at German airports. This change, effective from June 3, 2026, was published in the Federal Law Gazette on June 2, 2026. The decision follows Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India earlier this year, showcasing Germany’s commitment to enhancing ties with India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Federal Chancellor Merz highlighted the growth in bilateral trade during the visit. They acknowledged the record trade levels in 2024, which continued to rise in 2025. The two countries signed multiple agreements covering trade, technology, health, and renewable energy sectors.
India and Germany emphasized their support for the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) during the visit. They recognized its potential to transform global commerce, connectivity, and prosperity. Both leaders anticipated the inaugural IMEC ministerial meeting to advance this initiative further.
A Joint Declaration of Intent was signed to develop a Defense Industrial Cooperation Roadmap, aiming to foster long-term collaboration in defense industries. This includes technology partnerships, co-development, and co-production of defense platforms and equipment. India appreciated Germany’s efforts to streamline defense equipment export clearances.
