The Government of India, along with the Maharashtra government and public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) like BPCL, IOCL, and HPCL, have confirmed the availability of ample stocks of petrol, diesel, and LPG in Maharashtra despite global supply chain disruptions due to Middle East tensions. State Level Coordinator (Oil Industry) for Maharashtra, Mihir Ganesh Joshi, highlighted that the PSU oil companies have managed to maintain steady supplies, even with increased demand driven by agricultural activities, rural consumption, and concerns over potential fuel price hikes.
From May 1-21, 2026, PSU OMCs supplied 402 TKL of petrol and 789 TKL of diesel in Maharashtra. Notably, during May 22-28, 2026, an additional 284 TKL of diesel was provided to meet a sudden surge in demand. Throughout May 1-28, 2026, these companies delivered 527 TKL of petrol and 1,073 TKL of diesel, ensuring a continuous flow of petroleum products in the state. The shift of customers from private fuel retailers to PSU outlets due to price variations has also contributed to increased demand.
The release further disclosed that between May 1-21, there was an 18.54% rise in petrol demand and a 22.30% increase in diesel demand. In the subsequent period of May 22-28, the growth in petrol demand was 13.23%, while diesel demand soared to a record 43.37%. Overall, from May 1-28, 2026, petrol demand grew by 17.24% and diesel demand by 27.25%. Despite the escalating demand, PSU OMCs have efficiently maintained fuel supplies across Maharashtra, with only minor mismatches in a few rural areas.
To combat black marketing and hoarding, district collectors have been directed to conduct inspections and enforcement activities under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. A total of 332 raids have been carried out, resulting in nine FIRs, 15 arrests, and the confiscation of 75,595 liters of illegal diesel and 197 liters of petrol. Citizens are urged not to engage in panic buying or hoarding, as the authorities at both the central and state levels, along with PSU OMCs, are dedicated to ensuring a seamless and uninterrupted fuel supply across Maharashtra.
