The government is considering a pause in the ongoing Parliament session this week due to requests from members, including many from the Opposition, who want to focus on the upcoming Assembly elections in 5 States and Union Territories next month. The 7th session of the 18th Lok Sabha, which started its second leg on March 9, was initially set to end on April 2, concentrating on detailed financial matters and the Finance Bill. However, there might be a slight alteration in the schedule.
“After a brief recess,” a government official mentioned, “The Parliament may reconvene after the elections to complete pending business.” Once the results of the Assembly elections in the 5 States/UTs are announced on May 4, the parliament could reconvene for a few days. The Budget Session’s first part ran from January 28 to February 13, focusing on discussions regarding the President’s Address and the Union Budget for 2026-27.
During the previous leg of the Budget Session last month, the Opposition lodged a no-confidence notice against Speaker Om Birla, accusing him of biased behavior. The motion, supported by 118 MPs from various parties except the Trinamool Congress, was moved on March 9 and defeated by voice vote on March 11 after extensive debates. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the ongoing session, emphasizing the need for a united voice of peace and dialogue from the Indian Parliament amid the escalating West Asia conflict.
