A meeting of the Gujarat unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Core Committee took place at Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s official residence in Gandhinagar. Senior party leaders and Ministers, including Rushikesh Patel, Jitu Vaghani, and State BJP President Jagdish Vishwakarma, attended the closed-door meeting. This meeting followed the recent passing of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026, by the State Assembly, making Gujarat the second state after Uttarakhand to enact legislation for a uniform set of civil laws across all religions and communities.
The Core Committee meeting discussions are expected to focus on reviewing organizational strategy and administrative coordination in light of the legislative developments and preparations for the upcoming local body elections in Gujarat. Scheduled later this year, these elections will encompass various urban local bodies, including municipal corporations in cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara. The BJP leaders have been emphasizing the party’s readiness for the upcoming electoral processes and its efforts to communicate government initiatives to voters.
The passage of the UCC Bill has garnered attention in state and national political circles, with proponents highlighting its objective of legal uniformity and detractors expressing concerns about its potential impact on personal laws and cultural practices. The local body elections in Gujarat will serve as a significant electoral test for political parties this year, with the control of urban and rural governing bodies considered a crucial gauge of public sentiment. Additionally, these elections will play a pivotal role in setting the tone for the state Assembly elections scheduled in 2027.
