In a move towards prison reform, the Gujarat State Prisons and Correctional Administration Department have launched an educational initiative at Ahmedabad Central Jail. Through a collaboration with the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), inmates will have the opportunity to pursue education up to Class 12 while serving their sentences.
This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) allows inmates to resume their studies at the appropriate academic level if their education was previously disrupted. NIOS will offer vocational and skill-based courses to enhance inmates’ employability and facilitate their reintegration into society post-release.
The program, led by Dr. K.L.N. Rao, aims to transform correctional facilities into centers of learning and social rehabilitation. A special event under the “Ek Nai Umeed” initiative honored 18 students from inmate families who excelled in their academic exams, emphasizing the importance of education in shaping a better future.
Dr. Rao commended the students for their achievements and encouraged them to strive for excellence. He also engaged with inmates and their families, underlining the initiative’s objectives and the department’s commitment to providing educational opportunities for inmates and their children.
