Gujarat has made history by setting up the country’s inaugural ‘Service Commissionerate’, approved by the state cabinet to enhance the services economy and aid sectors like information technology, tourism, and logistics. The decision, led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, was disclosed by government spokesperson Minister Jitu Vaghani. This move aims to mirror the role of the Industries Commissionerate but for the services sector, marking a significant step towards economic diversification in Gujarat.
The newly established Service Commissionerate, a pioneering initiative in India, is a dedicated body to support the growth of service industries, akin to the role played by the Industries Commissionerate in industrial development. This innovative step positions Gujarat as a trailblazer for other states, emphasizing the importance of the service sector in fostering a balanced economy. The decision to create this entity stemmed from the Gujarat Reforms and Institutional Transformation (GRIT) initiative, focusing on comprehensive development of the state’s services sector.
Gujarat’s move towards bolstering the service sector, alongside its traditional manufacturing prowess, underscores a strategic shift towards a more diversified economy. The Service Commissionerate, having completed the appointment of a Service Commissioner, is poised to drive policy formulation, investment attraction, and overall growth in key service sectors like tourism, information technology, and logistics. The state’s emphasis on modern development through service-oriented industries is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities, particularly benefiting the youth.
The state government’s proposal to establish a ‘Service Sector Growth Fund’ of Rs 100 crore for the upcoming financial year under the Service Commissionerate signals a commitment to providing growth capital for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and start-ups operating in the service domain. Gujarat’s ambition to replicate its manufacturing success in the service sector reflects a strategic vision to position the state as a prominent hub for service-oriented industries on a national scale.
