Gujarat’s Health Department has taken strict action against six students from Bhavnagar’s Government Medical College following a ragging investigation. One student has been suspended for two years, and all six have been instructed to immediately leave their hostel rooms. The college’s Anti-Ragging Committee held a lengthy meeting, lasting from 5 p.m. on June 18 until 2 a.m. the next day, to address the issue.
The meeting was called by State Health Minister Praful Pansheriya after the reported ragging incident. Officials in Gandhinagar, the Additional Director, and the Anti-Ragging Committee handled the case urgently. The committee gathered statements from students and faculty members of the Orthopaedics Department during the nine-hour meeting and reviewed documentary evidence before making decisions.
Disciplinary measures were imposed on the students responsible for the incident based on the inquiry findings and the Health Minister’s directives. One student received a two-year suspension, three were suspended for one year, and two were suspended for six months. The suspended students are barred from participating in any college-related activities during their punishment period.
Pansheriya emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards ragging and any actions compromising student safety and dignity. He assured that strict actions would be taken against such incidents to maintain a safe academic environment. Pansheriya commended the swift investigation and action taken by officials and urged students to report any form of harassment promptly.
