Authorities in Gujarat are utilizing advanced surveillance and digital enforcement systems to enhance traffic discipline in major cities. The state government’s Surakshit Gujarat campaign has led to the installation of numerous CCTV cameras at busy intersections and key roads to monitor traffic movement. Dedicated traffic monitoring centers have been established to track camera feeds and identify violations.
The digitization of traffic monitoring and challan issuance has not only boosted enforcement but has also prompted motorists to adhere to traffic rules more diligently. Residents who have received e-challans have praised the system for its transparency and efficiency. For instance, Ravindra Patel from Ahmedabad’s Bopal area acknowledged his mistake of riding without a helmet after receiving an e-challan.
Another resident, Vyomesh Babulal, highlighted how the system has raised awareness about following traffic regulations for the well-being and safety of all. This initiative aligns with broader digital governance measures in Gujarat, in line with the ‘Digital India’ vision. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s administration has increasingly relied on the Parivahan portal and the e-challan system for traffic enforcement in the state.
In recent years, fines collected from traffic violators have seen a significant increase, with over Rs 581 crore collected in a three-year period. The use of CCTV cameras has not only aided in enforcing traffic rules but has also facilitated quicker responses to accidents, enabling authorities to provide timely assistance to victims. The primary focus of the campaign remains on road safety rather than revenue generation.
Traffic police officials emphasize that the smart traffic management system and online challan process are promoting better compliance with traffic rules, fostering a more disciplined traffic environment across Gujarat. The surveillance network has not only enhanced traffic monitoring but has also bolstered law enforcement efforts, contributing to the maintenance of law and order in the state.
