Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill acknowledged his team’s shortfall in scoring big during the IPL 2026 final. He mentioned that a higher total could have altered the game’s outcome, as they lost by five wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, led by Virat Kohli’s rapid 75 runs, successfully defended their title in front of a lively crowd. Kohli’s impressive performance helped RCB chase down 156 runs with two overs to spare, making them one of the few teams to retain the IPL championship.
Gill expressed that achieving a score of 180-190 would have made a significant difference in the match. Despite the pitch conditions being slightly challenging, especially for pacers due to early movement, GT struggled after losing early wickets and failing to build momentum. Gill believed that taking a couple of wickets in the powerplay could have kept them competitive.
RCB’s bowlers, including Josh Hazlewood, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Rasikh Salam Dar, laid the foundation for their victory on a varied pitch. Washington Sundar’s resilient half-century boosted GT’s total to 155, but it was not enough to counter Kohli’s exceptional batting display. Gill admitted that GT allowed RCB to score more runs than desired, particularly in the powerplay, despite being known for their strong bowling performances throughout the season.
Although GT ended up as the runners-up in IPL 2026, they received a prize of Rs 12.5 crore. Additionally, pacer Mohammed Siraj was recognized for delivering the most dot balls in the season (172), while opener Sai Sudharsan claimed the award for hitting the most fours in the competition (75).
