Heatwave conditions are forecasted to persist in large parts of northwest India for the next four to five days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, and a yellow alert for Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Meteorologist Akhil Srivastava mentioned that a western disturbance centered over Jammu & Kashmir could lead to thunderstorm activity in the hilly regions, particularly in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
Srivastava highlighted the likelihood of thunderstorm activity in the hilly regions due to the western disturbance over Jammu & Kashmir. Additionally, there is a possibility of hailstorms at isolated places in Jammu, leading to an orange alert being issued for the region. He also noted that while isolated thunderstorm activity may occur in the plains, it is unlikely to provide significant relief from the ongoing heatwave.
The prevailing heatwave conditions in northwest India are expected to persist for the next four to five days, with minimal chances of a substantial change in maximum temperatures. Meanwhile, Chandigarh, Punjab, and parts of Himachal Pradesh experienced continued heatwave conditions on Sunday, with residents expressing concerns over rising temperatures and challenging daytime conditions.
Residents in Chandigarh emphasized the increasing heat as a concern for both people and the environment, urging everyone to take care of themselves, as well as birds, animals, and trees. The IMD has advised individuals in affected areas to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, stay well-hydrated, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses. The prolonged high temperatures in north and central India have raised worries regarding public health and agricultural stress, prompting authorities to closely monitor weather developments in the upcoming days.
