The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has predicted heavy rainfall and strong winds in various districts of Tamil Nadu in the upcoming days due to a trough extending from Madhya Pradesh to Tamil Nadu. The trough, currently passing through the Gulf of Mannar region, spans across districts like Theni, Dindigul, Karur, Tiruchy, Namakkal, Erode, and the Nilgiris. Expect intense rainfall and gusty winds up to 50 kmph on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, heavy rain and strong winds are expected in hilly and western districts such as Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Coimbatore. Authorities advise caution, especially in vulnerable and low-lying areas prone to landslides and waterlogging. Widespread rainfall activity is predicted on May 7 in districts like Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Theni, Tenkasi, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari.
The weather department also forecasts thunderstorms, lightning, and winds around 40 kmph in several southern and western districts. Moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms is expected in districts including Dindigul, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, and neighboring areas. Intermittent showers and cloudy conditions are likely to persist through the weekend in many parts of the state.
Mayiladuthurai and Pudukkottai districts are specifically warned of heavy rainfall on May 8 and 9. Fishermen are advised to be cautious due to rough weather conditions along the coast. State disaster response teams and district administrations are on alert as the southwest monsoon conditions strengthen gradually over southern India.
