The International Cricket Council (ICC) Board, in its Annual Meetings in Edinburgh, has once again urged Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to conduct elections promptly. The ICC acknowledged progress in revising the constitution but emphasized the need for elections for better governance within the national cricket body. Until further progress is made, SLC will not be able to participate in ICC Board meetings.
The ICC also approved various governance, membership, and Member support initiatives during the meetings. Additionally, a Governance Review Committee was formed with BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia appointed as its chairperson. The committee will oversee important aspects of the global game.
Furthermore, the ICC established two key board sub-committees to manage essential sectors of cricket. The Governance Review Committee, led by Saikia, includes Dr. Mohammed Moosajee and Dr. Ros Rivaz as members. Another committee, the Franchise Leagues Committee, chaired by Tamim Iqbal, will focus on franchise leagues and includes members from various cricketing nations.
In a move to expand cricket’s global presence, the ICC welcomed Mauritius as its 111th member. This decision aligns with the ICC’s aim to enhance cricket’s reach, especially in emerging markets, and provide more opportunities for participation and growth worldwide. Additionally, the ICC approved a USD 12.82 million loan to Cricket West Indies (CWI) to support its operations.
Regarding Sri Lanka Cricket, the ICC emphasized the importance of holding elections promptly despite progress in revising the constitution. Until elections are conducted, SLC will not be allowed to participate in ICC Board meetings. Presently, SLC is managed by a nine-member transformation committee following the removal of its previous office bearers by the government.
