The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Delhi-NCR, predicting thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds until June 25. This alert comes as Delhi faces ongoing challenges with poor air quality. The warning extends to various states and Union Territories, including Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, and others.
The IMD has also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in regions like Assam, Meghalaya, and Sikkim over the next two days. Additionally, heavy rainfall is expected in states such as Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, and Kerala. Delhi experienced moderate temperatures with a maximum of 38.4 degrees Celsius, slightly below the seasonal average. Safdarjung, the city’s base weather station, recorded a temperature 0.5 degrees lower than the previous day.
For Tuesday, partly cloudy skies are predicted in Delhi, with temperatures ranging from 25 to 40 degrees Celsius. June is known for its scorching heat in Delhi, often surpassing 40 degrees Celsius. However, the forecast of thunderstorms and gusty winds offers hope for relief from the intense heat. The southwest monsoon has picked up pace in Maharashtra after a brief lull, expected to cover the entire state soon.
Despite the changing weather, Delhi’s air quality remains in the “poor” category. Anand Vihar reported an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 246, while other stations like IIT Delhi, RK Puram, and Rohini also recorded moderate to poor levels.
