After India’s 1-2 defeat in the home ODI series against New Zealand, Captain Shubman Gill acknowledged the team’s overall shortcomings. He highlighted the failure of the batters to capitalize on their starts and criticized the subpar fielding standards displayed throughout the series.
New Zealand secured their first-ever ODI series victory over India on Indian soil with a 41-run triumph in the third ODI held in Indore. This loss marked India’s first defeat in 14 home ODIs where they had won the toss.
The ODI series occurred a little over 16 months following New Zealand’s 3-0 whitewash of India in a three-Test series back in 2024. Despite Virat Kohli’s resilient effort with his 54th ODI century, India fell short against New Zealand, who were propelled by centuries from Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Gill expressed disappointment in the team’s inability to convert starts into substantial scores and emphasized the need for improved fielding. He also noted the contrasting effectiveness of New Zealand’s batsmen in converting opportunities and their superior fielding, which made a significant impact on the series outcome.
Looking ahead, India and New Zealand are set to face off in a five-match T20I series commencing on Wednesday, serving as their final preparation before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to begin on February 7.
