The Indian Air Force’s Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT) is set to showcase an aerial performance at Somnath Temple for the temple’s 75th anniversary celebrations. Scheduled for May 11, the event will feature six Hawk Mk-132 aircraft displaying synchronized aerobatic formations above the temple in Prabhas Patan. Wing Commander Janmeet Sharma mentioned that the air display, scheduled for 11 a.m., will be graced by the Prime Minister’s presence.
The performance is part of the ‘Somnath Amritparva-2026’ celebrations at the first Jyotirlinga shrine. Recognized as the “Ambassadors of the Indian Air Force,” SKAT will exhibit close-formation flying and aerobatic maneuvers to showcase precision, discipline, and teamwork. Established in 1996, the team operates the Hawk Mk-132 aircraft, known for its synchronized displays across India and internationally.
Led by Group Captain Ajay Dasarathi, the team’s motto “Sadaiva Sarvottam” emphasizes precision and consistent training. The display over Somnath Temple will involve six aircraft engaging in coordinated aerial maneuvers under Group Captain Dasarathi’s leadership. The Hawk aircraft, capable of operational deployment in emergencies and combat scenarios, are expected to reach speeds between 800 and 900 kilometers per hour during the performance.
Safety measures, including bird hazard control and ground-based coordination support, will be in place to ensure operational safety. The Hawk aircraft, now equipped with indigenous colored smoke pods, can release saffron, white, and green smoke trails representing the Indian National Flag during the display.
