Nearly 60% of Indian businesses with confidence in scaling AI responsibly have established mature responsible AI (RAI) frameworks, as per a report by the National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom). The study indicates that 30% of respondents already have mature RAI practices, and 45% are in the process of implementing formal frameworks, showing significant progress from the previous year. The survey, which involved 574 senior executives from various business sectors in India, highlighted the importance of data access and regulatory clarity in enhancing responsible AI practices.
The report emphasized a positive link between AI capability and responsible practices, with large enterprises leading in maturity at 46%, while SMEs and startups are making strides with 20% and 16% respectively. Notably, the BFSI sector leads in sectoral maturity at 35%, followed by Technology, Media, and Telecommunications (TMT) at 31%, and healthcare at 18%, with a substantial number of businesses in these sectors actively enhancing their frameworks.
A key focus for organizations is workforce enablement, with nearly 90% investing in sensitization and training programs. While business leaders are confident in meeting data protection obligations, concerns persist regarding monitoring-related compliances. Sangeeta Gupta, Senior VP and Chief Strategy Officer at Nasscom, stressed the critical role of responsible AI in fostering trust, ensuring accountability, and driving innovation across various industries.
According to Gupta, India’s AI leadership will be gauged not only by the extent of adoption but also by the responsible and inclusive design and deployment of AI systems. Companies exhibit high confidence in meeting data protection requirements, indicating the maturity of privacy frameworks, although there is a need to strengthen monitoring-related compliances further.
