A Southern California-based Indian dance academy, Ghungroo Dance School, has been chosen to showcase their talent at the Diwali Dance Fest held at Walt Disney World. The academy’s selection from a pool of 25 teams out of over 400 applicants underscores its increasing recognition and impressive performance history. Founded by Jini Valiaveettil, the school provides classes in Bollywood and semi-classical dance for individuals of all ages, from children to adults.
The academy, known for its inclusive training approach, attracts students from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Emphasizing rhythm, movement, and community, Ghungroo Dance School has gained popularity for its Bollyhop classes, resonating with dancers from diverse cultures in Southern California. Valiaveettil expressed excitement over the students’ engagement with Indian music and dance in a fresh manner.
With a team of instructors like Karthika Ashok specializing in classical Indian and Bollywood dance, and Manya Aggarwal bringing a modern touch through Bollyhop, a fusion of Bollywood and hip-hop, the academy successfully appeals to younger audiences. The blend of traditional and contemporary dance styles has enabled Ghungroo Dance School to captivate a wider demographic.
Ghungroo dancers are regular performers at significant cultural events in Southern California, including the inauguration of the Radha Krishna Dham Hindu Temple in Tarzana and Indian Independence Day celebrations across the region, drawing large and diverse audiences. Additionally, the school actively engages in community outreach efforts, collaborating with CRY America to support cultural programs benefiting underprivileged children in India.
