Indian Railways is poised for significant growth as the government greenlights a total investment of Rs 1.53 lakh crore for 100 new projects in 2025-26, covering over 6,000 kilometers of railway network. This marks a substantial increase compared to the previous fiscal year, with approvals rising by 56%, route coverage surging by over 114%, and financial commitment jumping by more than 110%.
The sanctioned projects encompass new lines, doubling and multitracking works, bypass lines, flyovers, and chord lines. These initiatives are strategically designed to alleviate congestion on existing routes, enhance punctuality, improve passenger experience, and expand connectivity to underserved regions. The aim is to enhance operational efficiency and reduce travel time throughout the network.
These projects are spread across various states, ensuring a well-rounded and inclusive expansion of the railway network. Key focus states include Maharashtra with 17 projects, Bihar with 11, Jharkhand with 10, and Madhya Pradesh with 9, given their importance in freight corridors, industrial connectivity, and passenger demand.
Aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, these projects not only focus on infrastructure development but also aim to drive social transformation. Emphasis is placed on extending rail connectivity to tribal and remote areas, such as the Rowghat–Jagdalpur line in Chhattisgarh, to provide access to markets, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities, thereby integrating underserved populations into the national development mainstream.
