Indian tennis is set to receive a significant boost with the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) gearing up to host two consecutive ATP Challenger 50 tournaments at the S.M. Krishna Tennis Stadium in Bengaluru. Scheduled from May 11 to 17 and May 18 to 24, these events will place Bengaluru at the forefront of men’s professional tennis in India, offering players back-to-back chances to earn valuable ATP ranking points on home turf. These tournaments, part of the ATP Challenger Tour, play a crucial role in nurturing emerging talent and bridging the gap between the ITF circuit and the ATP Tour.
The decision to host these tournaments follows the successful Bengaluru Open 125 in January and India’s recent Davis Cup victory over the Netherlands. This initiative is part of KSLTA’s long-term strategy to establish Bengaluru as a top-tier tennis destination, fostering a robust international calendar that benefits players, coaches, officials, and aspiring young talents.
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Maheshwar Rao, IAS, Chief Commissioner of The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and Honorary Secretary of KSLTA, highlighted the association’s commitment to elevating Bengaluru as a high-performance tennis hub. Anil Dhupar, Secretary General of the All India Tennis Association (AITA), commended KSLTA for bringing additional ATP Challenger 50 events to India, emphasizing the vision to enhance the country’s tennis ecosystem and support player development through increased domestic competition.
Tournament Director and Honorary Joint Secretary of KSLTA, Sunil Yajaman, underlined the competitive advantage of the two-week tournament format, noting the physical, financial, and mental demands of professional tennis. He emphasized the benefits of hosting these events domestically, reducing travel fatigue and providing Indian players with an opportunity to enhance their ATP rankings. The back-to-back tournaments not only offer a platform for Indian players to excel but also contribute to Bengaluru’s standing as a premier international tennis destination in Asia.
