The Jabalpur administration in Madhya Pradesh has officially ended the search and rescue mission at Bargi Dam after recovering the final missing person, Kamaraj’s body. This recovery marked the closure of the extensive search that began after a tourist cruise boat capsized during a severe storm on April 30. The tragic incident has resulted in a total of 13 fatalities, with the recent recovery of nine-year-old Mayuran near the accident site.
The search efforts intensified as the bodies of four-year-old Viraj Soni and six-year-old Sri Tamil were located on a somber Saturday. Despite the loss of 13 lives, 28 individuals were successfully rescued from the water, thanks to the collaborative efforts of local residents and official rescue teams. Eyewitnesses recounted a sudden and violent storm that led to the boat’s capsizing near Khamariya Island around 5.30 p.m. on April 30.
During the rescue operations, a heartbreaking scene unfolded as the body of Marina Massey was found holding her four-year-old son, Trishaan, tightly against her chest. Investigations into the tragedy have exposed significant safety oversights, including the boat carrying more passengers than permitted and departing despite a weather alert. It was also revealed that many passengers were not wearing life jackets when the boat sank.
The bodies of the victims are being transported to their respective cities for final rites, with some sent to New Delhi and Coimbatore. Initially, local fishermen and farmers played a crucial role in the rescue efforts, followed by specialized units from the Army, NDRF, SDRF, and police taking charge. Questions now loom over the administration’s supervision of safety measures at the dam.
