External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will represent India at the funeral of Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Khaleda Zia passed away at the age of 80 in Dhaka after battling illness for over a month.
Jaishankar is scheduled to visit Dhaka on Wednesday to pay his respects to the late leader. Khaleda Zia, who was also the Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, had been receiving medical treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over Khaleda Zia’s demise, highlighting her significant role in Bangladesh’s development. Khaleda Zia, the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, had a history of health issues, including liver cirrhosis and diabetes.
Over the years, Khaleda Zia faced various health challenges, including complications with her heart, lungs, and kidneys. Despite efforts for advanced treatment abroad, doctors advised against international travel due to her deteriorating health condition.
