Hiring in India’s formal economy is expanding into consumer-facing and service sectors, moving beyond traditional technology roles, as per a recent report. Job postings in India saw a 3.4% year-on-year increase in May but slightly dipped by 0.7% on a monthly basis, according to the Indeed report. Notably, sectors like sports, beauty & wellness, personal care & home health, and cleaning & sanitation have shown significant job growth in the past three months.
The report highlights a shift towards more formal work arrangements in India, especially in sectors like wellness, home services, fitness, and personal care. Callam Pickering, senior economist for Indeed APAC, mentioned that job creation in the formal sector is expected to surpass overall employment growth in the country. Formal sector jobs are known for better pay, security, and career advancement opportunities.
Employer demand in India remains robust, contributing to urbanization and economic growth, according to the report. While software development job postings decreased by 12.3% in the last three months, tech-related hiring remains healthy overall. Remote work opportunities vary across occupations, with around 20% of social science job postings mentioning remote work recently.
