Kannur International Airport Ltd. (KIAL), a significant project in Kerala overseen by the previous government, is now under investigation following concerns raised by the KIAL Shareholders’ Association. The association has urged Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan to initiate a Vigilance probe into the airport company’s operations during the previous administration.
The issue gained political attention when MLA T.K. Govindan highlighted it in the Assembly, leading to calls for an official inquiry into the company’s affairs. Allegations by the shareholders’ association suggest that decisions made by the previous management led to financial losses for KIAL and impacted shareholders negatively.
The association’s detailed memorandum points out irregularities in administration, deviations from standard procedures, financial decisions causing losses, and violations of corporate governance norms. It calls for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and protect the interests of shareholders.
Questions have been raised about the governance of KIAL, with concerns over transparency in decision-making processes and the need for scrutiny of administrative and commercial actions by an independent body. The demand for a Vigilance probe comes at a crucial time, with the matter now under review by the Chief Minister and the Assembly.
KIAL, established as Kerala’s fourth international airport with significant public investment, has attracted shareholders locally and internationally. Despite its growth in passenger and cargo operations, issues regarding financial performance and governance have periodically surfaced, prompting calls for greater transparency in its management.
