Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister and State Congress President, D.K. Shivakumar, announced that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project is prepared and awaiting submission to the Central government. The state government has set up a dedicated office for the project and is identifying alternative land for the forest area that will be submerged. Shivakumar emphasized that Karnataka is obligated to release 177 TMC of water to Tamil Nadu as per the Cauvery water dispute.
Referring to the ongoing water issue, Shivakumar stated that Tamil Nadu has no grounds to oppose the Mekedatu project, as per the Supreme Court’s directive for the Central Water Commission to make a decision. He highlighted the importance of governance based on actions taken while in power rather than merely holding office. The Deputy Chief Minister expressed pride in the Congress-led government’s fulfillment of promises to the people over its three-year tenure.
Shivakumar outlined the government’s commitment to further developmental projects in the coming years and discussed contingency plans for potential rainfall deficits. He debunked the superstition that political leaders lose power by visiting Chamarajanagar district, emphasizing the district’s cultural and natural significance. The Deputy CM also mentioned ongoing renovation efforts at local temples and the government’s initiatives for industrial growth in the region.
