A week after the United Democratic Front’s victory in Kerala, the state awaits the announcement of its next chief minister. While other states have swiftly formed governments post-elections, Kerala remains in political limbo. The Congress leadership, including Mallikarjuna Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, is carefully considering the decision amid intense lobbying and negotiations.
In contrast to West Bengal and Tamil Nadu where new chief ministers have been sworn in, Kerala’s leadership situation remains unresolved. The three key contenders, K.C. Venugopal, V.D. Satheesan, and Ramesh Chennithala, are all vying for the position. Concerns exist within the Congress regarding potential political risks associated with Venugopal’s transition from an MP to a legislator.
The delay has empowered Satheesan and Chennithala’s camps, who believe that alternative solutions are being explored by the AICC. Despite the prolonged process, Sonia Gandhi has not directly intervened yet. The focus for the Congress high command is on maintaining unity within the Kerala unit and reaching a consensus to appease all factions.
Kerala, despite the UDF’s resounding victory, remains in anticipation of its next leader.
