Kolkata and other districts in south Bengal experienced a significant rise in minimum temperature on Sunday, only to see a sudden drop in temperatures on Monday. In Kolkata, the minimum temperature increased to 15 degrees Celsius on Sunday but fell to 12.4 degrees Celsius on Monday morning, below the normal level.
On Sunday, Kolkata’s maximum temperature remained below normal at 23.9 degrees Celsius. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata’s Alipore has predicted a severe cold wave across the state, with no immediate relief expected. The cold spell is anticipated to persist until Makar Sankranti on January 14, with temperatures likely to stay below normal for the next few days.
Sriniketan in Birbhum district had been the coldest spot in south Bengal for a while, with temperatures consistently below 10 degrees Celsius. However, on Monday, Kalyani in Nadia district surpassed Sriniketan as the second coldest place in West Bengal, with a minimum temperature of 7.5 degrees Celsius. Darjeeling remains the coldest place in the state, recording a temperature of 3.6 degrees Celsius.
Various districts in West Bengal reported minimum temperatures ranging from 9.2 to 11.4 degrees Celsius on Monday. A fog warning has been issued across the state, with south Bengal districts expecting light to moderate fog that could reduce visibility significantly. Northern districts like Darjeeling may experience dense fog, leading to visibility dropping as low as 50 meters.
