After Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s announcement of a ‘zero tolerance’ policy on illegal construction, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has initiated actions against violations in various areas of the West Bengal state capital. Recently, municipal workers conducted raids in six locations in Kolkata to dismantle unauthorized constructions. Notably, three illegal structures in Tiljala, Kasba, and Beliaghata are being demolished by the civic body, with tight security measures in place to prevent any disturbances.
According to KMC officials, the three illegal constructions under demolition are reportedly associated with a local Trinamool leader. Raju Naskar, a Trinamool leader, is linked to the illegal construction in Beliaghata, while reports suggest involvement of a local councillor and a borough chairman in the other two sites. Despite the denials of these individuals regarding any connection to the illegal constructions, it is alleged that multi-storey buildings were erected deviating from the approved plans, with ongoing construction in two of the blocks.
KMC Commissioner Smita Pandey confirmed a demolition drive at six locations, emphasizing that legal obstacles are being addressed before proceeding with demolitions. Stressing on the distinction between legal and illegal constructions, she assured that only unauthorized structures would face action. The KMC has taken precautionary measures to avert any untoward incidents, with the area secured by police and central forces.
In a recent development, State Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul visited Kasba during the demolition of an illegal construction site. Locals have raised concerns about businessman-turned-strongman Biswajit Poddar, known as Sona Pappu, allegedly being involved in illegal construction activities. The municipality’s notice outside the site indicates prior identification of the illegal construction, questioning the continued construction despite warnings.
