Following overnight rain, Kolkata experienced a significant 6-degree Celsius drop in minimum temperature on Saturday. The Meteorological department predicts scattered to moderate rain throughout the day, with this weather pattern expected to persist for a few more days in Kolkata and across south Bengal. Meanwhile, north Bengal has been warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall, and turbulent conditions are anticipated in the Bay of Bengal for the next two days.
Since Friday evening, Kolkata has been hit by rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds, with speeds reaching 50 to 60 kilometers per hour. The intensity of the rain increased overnight, leading to torrential downpours in various parts of the city, accompanied by lightning. Consequently, the mercury in Kolkata plummeted by six degrees Celsius in a single drop, with the minimum temperature dropping to 19.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday morning.
The Meteorological department forecasts a further rise in temperatures by three to five degrees after two days of decline. Apart from Kolkata, several districts in South Bengal experienced storms and rainfall on Saturday night. In Malda district, adverse weather conditions caused the collapse of a wholesale market shed, injuring two individuals. North Bengal is also facing adverse weather, with heavy rainfall warnings issued for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar districts, expected to last until next Wednesday or Thursday.
Warnings for scattered rainfall with gusty winds persist in Kolkata, while districts like Howrah, Hooghly, Bankura, and others may experience wind speeds of 60 to 70 kilometers per hour. The adverse weather is likely to ease from Sunday evening onwards, with warnings limited to specific districts. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea until Sunday due to cyclonic circulation, which is also affecting other regions, leading to favorable conditions for rain across the state.
