Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk highlighted the government’s offer of “constructive and meaningful dialogue” as a crucial goal of his movement. Wangchuk, speaking publicly after his release from detention under the National Security Act, expressed satisfaction with the dialogue initiative, stating it was in line with their longstanding demands. He underscored the significance of initiating dialogue, stating that it was the primary objective of their efforts.

Wangchuk, known for his non-violent approach, mentioned his reluctance towards hunger strikes and fasting, emphasizing the necessity rather than choice in adopting such methods during protests. He also acknowledged the role of legal proceedings and public scrutiny in uncovering the realities surrounding the Ladakh situation. The activist credited the legal team for their pro bono assistance, instilling confidence in the pursuit of justice.

Expressing gratitude towards supporters nationwide, Wangchuk attributed the positive outcomes to the overwhelming support and solidarity received during his ordeal. He recognized the collective efforts and urged equal attention to others facing similar challenges. Meanwhile, Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, stressed the importance of moving beyond notions of victory or defeat, focusing instead on fostering meaningful dialogues for sustainable solutions.

Angmo highlighted the values of resilience and truth, emphasizing their role in achieving positive results. She expressed optimism for forthcoming discussions with authorities to address Ladakh’s governance, environmental, and developmental issues. Wangchuk’s release from detention has sparked hopes for renewed talks on Ladakh’s pertinent concerns, including governance and environmental sustainability.
