Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics has appointed Andris Kulbergs, a parliament member from the opposition United List party, to lead the formation of a new government. Rinkevics, during a press conference, mentioned conducting extensive discussions with various political parties and factions in the Saeima following the resignation of outgoing Prime Minister Evika Silina from New Unity. The decision to choose a representative from the opposition was influenced by recent political developments and the desire to allow the opposition to present a fresh perspective.
Rinkevics has set a deadline of May 25 for the prime minister-designate to provide a progress report, detailing the coalition’s framework, distribution of responsibilities among parties, and a draft of the government’s declaration. Silina resigned on Thursday after the collapse of the three-party coalition government comprising New Unity, the Progressives, and the Union of Greens and Farmers, just months before the upcoming parliamentary elections in October. Silina cited political rivalry and narrow party interests as reasons for her resignation, emphasizing the need for responsible governance.
The resignation of Defence Minister Andris Spruds, replaced by Colonel Raivis Melnis, triggered the recent government crisis. Silina’s decision stemmed from the failure of the defence sector’s leadership to ensure national security, particularly following an incident where Ukrainian drones entered Latvian airspace from Russia and damaged an oil storage facility. The political landscape in Latvia is currently undergoing significant changes, with the opposition being given the opportunity to shape the country’s future direction.
