The local administration in Chandigarh has taken action against a liquor shop in Sector 9 market for a unique promotional event. The shop organized a free “langar” of liquor-dipped ice cones, attracting attention for promoting a new liquor brand. This event, known as “sharab ka baraf ka gola” and “daaru ka langar,” faced criticism on social media for serving alcohol in a public setting.
Police have filed a case against the liquor shop owner, Rajesh Sachdeva, under the Punjab Excise Act, 1914, and Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav held a meeting with liquor license holders to address compliance issues with the Excise Policy and violations seen on social media. He emphasized that any breach of the policy would not be tolerated and warned of strict actions, including license cancellation and blacklisting.
During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner stressed the importance of adhering to the minimum liquor sale price as per regulations. Any deviation from the pricing structure would lead to severe penalties under the Excise Policy. Additionally, the Excise Department has implemented a real-time stock monitoring system for enhanced transparency and control.
