A significant initiative has been rolled out in Kerala to enhance early detection of oral cancer, uniting dental professionals, cancer specialists, and healthcare institutions. The initiative, part of CanWin led by the Indian Dental Association with support from VPS Lakeshore Hospital and the Chittilappilly Foundation, aims to establish a vast community-level oral cancer surveillance effort. Central to the program is the Oral Lesion Surveillance Program (OLSP), which aims to transform nearly 6,500 dental clinics in Kerala into early oral cancer detection centers through systematic screening, documentation, and referral processes.
Dr. Eapen Thomas highlighted the importance of the initiative, emphasizing that oral cancer is a significant public health issue in India, often diagnosed at advanced stages. Early detection through community-level screening can lead to improved survival rates and treatment outcomes. By leveraging dental clinics as primary sites for cancer surveillance, the initiative capitalizes on the regular visits individuals make to dentists for routine care, enabling the early identification of suspicious lesions.
The initiative seeks to address the challenge of delayed diagnosis in oral cancer treatment, aiming to detect conditions earlier where patients seek care. Dr. Aswin Mullath explained that the goal is to integrate screening as a standard component of dental care, facilitating prompt referrals of suspected cases for specialist evaluation. S.K. Abdulla emphasized that early detection at the community level could significantly reduce late-stage diagnoses and alleviate the burden of oral cancer in Kerala.
The project, with an estimated cost of around Rs 50 lakh, is being funded through institutional partnerships and philanthropic support. Financial aid will also be provided to economically disadvantaged patients requiring treatment under the program.
