The Malian army reported the neutralization of more than 200 terrorists in coordinated air and ground operations in Anefis, located in the northern Kidal region. The operations, which included 35 airstrikes, resulted in the destruction of five armored vehicles, approximately 20 pickup trucks, and about 100 motorcycles. The army stated that ongoing operations with partners in Anefis demonstrate their commitment to combat armed terrorist groups until objectives are met.
Following attacks on July 4 in various Malian localities such as Aguelhok, Anefis, Gao, Sevare, and Kenioroba, the Malian army successfully repelled the assaults. Mali has been grappling with a precarious security situation marked by frequent armed group attacks, especially in the northern and central regions. In a previous incident in April, Mali’s Defence Minister Sadio Camara was killed in an attack by armed terrorist groups at his residence near Bamako.
The African Union (AU) denounced the recent coordinated armed attacks in Mali, emphasizing the serious threat terrorism and violent extremism pose to the country, the Sahel region, and the entire African continent. AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf condemned the attacks, highlighting the imperative to strengthen collaborative efforts for peace, security, and stability while prioritizing civilian protection. Youssouf reiterated the AU’s unwavering support for Malian authorities and regional initiatives aimed at combating terrorism and fostering lasting peace in Mali and the Sahel region.
