Police in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district have apprehended a man in connection with the killing of an unidentified individual. The suspect reportedly confessed during questioning that he had planned to consume the victim’s flesh. The incident occurred in the Kurshahat area under Dinhata in Cooch Behar, causing alarm among residents.
Authorities disclosed that the deceased person’s identity remains unknown. The victim, believed to have resided near a crematorium in the vicinity, was discovered dead in a pond in Kurshahat. Upon recovery of the body, investigators observed incisions on the neck and throat.
Subsequent to the discovery, law enforcement initiated an inquiry and detained a young man identified as Firdous Alam. Sources indicated that the suspect was allegedly under the influence of substances. Police asserted that the accused murdered the unidentified individual, transported the body to a water body, cleaned it, and concealed it.
During interrogation, the suspect purportedly admitted to the crime and acknowledged his intention to consume parts of the body. Dinhata SDPO Dhiman Mitra remarked that the incident is highly unusual and grave, characterized by the accused’s motive to consume human flesh, marking a rare instance of cannibalism.
Mitra further stated, “The police were alerted about the suspect by local informants, leading to his arrest. A comprehensive investigation is ongoing, with further details to be provided in due course.” The body was found on January 10, and the suspect was apprehended on Monday, following which a murder case was filed, and the Dinhata Sahibganj police station launched an inquiry.
Amid the investigation, police detained Alam, a resident of Tharaikhana village, who was presented before a district court and remanded to four days of police custody.
