Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh emphasized the state’s unity in diversity, with 36 communities coexisting harmoniously and contributing significantly to Indian sports. He praised Manipuri athletes for consistently bringing honor to the nation, stating that no Indian contingent at major international sporting events is complete without players from Manipur.
Singh attended the International Olympic Day Run and Tree Plantation event organized by the Manipur Olympic Association at the Olympic Bhavan in Imphal. He highlighted Manipur as a place where diverse communities have lived in harmony for years and stressed the state’s crucial role in Indian sports, leading to the establishment of the country’s first National Sports University in Manipur.
Recognizing Manipur’s sporting prowess, the Chief Minister mentioned the upcoming completion of the university infrastructure and shared his experience as a Taekwondo player, emphasizing the importance of discipline in sports. He encouraged young athletes to respect their mentors, maintain unity across communities, and cultivate determination not only in sports but also in education and life in general.
Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh, also responsible for Youth Affairs and Sports, discussed India’s preparations for hosting the 2036 Olympic Games and highlighted Manipur’s significant contribution to producing 19 Olympians despite its small population. He emphasized the need for modern sports equipment to support athletes and urged players to uphold discipline, avoid substance abuse, and strive for good health and responsibility.
As part of the event, the Chief Minister flagged off the International Olympic Day Run and participated in a tree plantation drive, joined by various dignitaries, MLAs, sports organizations’ heads, officials, and athletes, showcasing the state’s commitment to sports and unity.
